Chief Omokomoko and His Group of Orogun

Chief Omokomoko and His Group of Orogun occupy a foundational place in Nigerian traditional music, marking the dawn of recorded Urhobo contemporary sounds. Born in 1920, Chief Dr. Omokomoko Osokpa of the Orogun Kingdom in Delta State became a trailblazing figure who reshaped Urhobo musical expression through his recordings and cultural preservation.
Omokomoko’s artistry was firmly anchored in the Urhobo people’s heritage, a community rich in folklore, ceremonial chants, and rhythmic storytelling. Drawing on these traditions, he became the first Urhobo musician to immortalize their sacred sounds on record, earning recognition as the father of contemporary Urhobo music.
Across his decades-long career, Omokomoko and his ensemble developed a distinct sound that combined traditional vocal techniques with indigenous instruments. Their performances wove intricate percussion, narrative lyrics, and cultural instrumentation into a sonic style that was fresh yet deeply rooted. Despite his blindness, Omokomoko’s vision in music remained unmatched, producing works of spiritual and cultural resonance.
The Orogun group was more than a band; it embodied the cultural pride and resilience of the Orogun people. Their music featured layered harmonies, call-and-response structures, and rhythmic sophistication, reflecting Urhobo musical intelligence. Omokomoko’s compositions often addressed justice, unity, tradition, and social issues, while preserving folklore and community values.

His music not only created a path for future Urhobo musicians but also showed how traditional music could evolve without losing authenticity. Even after his passing in 2005, his legacy endures as an inspiration for musicians and cultural custodians, ensuring Urhobo heritage lives on through the recorded art he pioneered.
