Words of Wisdom

Fabomo Edoleyi

Music is an art. An art that requires dedication, mastering all the parts that creates beautiful rhythm. Dr. Fabomo grew up around Karita dancers—cultural performers in Edo state, a craft that is dying. He loved music, learning the eccentric dances that flowed with the tremendous amount of energy, enticing voices that carried the fables and culture of his people. He started playing guitars, becoming a skillful instrumentalist. The legend from Oza, Edo state went on a career in music that has spanned the course of 40 years and counting. In 1988, he released Okpitan, a song that earned him an honorary doctorate degree from his people in Lagos. His songs were different, carried solely by wise sayings and proverbs, seeking not just entertainment but a reform in a society that seems to forget their beautiful culture, so beautiful it attracts and marvels the West. He believed that music was a carrier of culture, traditions and beliefs, tasked with the duty to make it known to the coming generation when they were long gone. His other song, Itendo, stays everlasting, a reminder of the beautiful culture of Benin, their empire. With a plethora of songs in his name, including Ama Ta Ma Ruen, Avanghiwiyoro, he created a name for himself, regardless if you understand his language or not. His music has that effect, where his harmonious voice carries you along, despite being sung in a dialect foreign to you. Dr. Fabomo continues to perform, encouraging the younger ones to revive highlife, and the culture.
