Igba Ijele Dance of Igwebuike Age Grade Amawbia Urban
Igba Ijele Dance
The Igba Ijele is a prestigious Nigerian cultural dance that originated in Ichi community of Ekwusigo Local Government Area in Anambra State and has been adopted by various communities throughout Igboland. This royal dance form is characterised by its regal movements that convey feelings of self-importance, self-exhilaration, and kingly awareness, making it an essential element of chieftaincy installations and royal ceremonies. The dance became widely recognised through groups like the Ifite Nwanne Amaka Age Grade of Oraifite community, who borrowed and adapted the tradition in the 1980s.
The dance is defined by its sophisticated musical arrangement featuring a complex ensemble of traditional instruments including the nnukwu igba (master drum), nne igba (mother drum), umu igba (children drums), ogwe (tall drum), ogene (metal gong), ekwe (wooden drum), oyo and ekpiri rattles, and the pivotal oja (notched flute). The performance follows a call-and-response pattern led by the oja flutist, with the dance characterised by polyrhythmic expressions and cyclical movements that maintain both masculine and feminine elements.
The most distinctive aspect of Igba Ijele lies in its organisational structure and performance protocol. The dance requires extensive training periods, formal initiation processes, and adherence to strict cultural codes. Performance arrangements include instrumentalists positioned in semicircular formation, with dancers arranged in groups of three both vertically and horizontally, led by a central lead dancer who introduces each movement sequence.
These cultural practices have established Igba Ijele as one of the most revered dance forms in Igboland, significantly contributing to the preservation of traditional Nigerian performance arts. The dance continues to serve as a bridge between ancestral customs and contemporary cultural expression, inspiring younger generations while maintaining its authentic ceremonial significance in royal and community celebrations across southeastern Nigeria.
