Ugbo Ekhator & His Philosopher Band
Ugbo Ekhator was a renowned Nigerian musician and bandleader who made significant contributions to the highlife music tradition from the Benin region of Nigeria. Leading the celebrated ensemble known as Ugbo and His Philosophers Dance Band of Benin, he created music that masterfully fused traditional Edo cultural elements with contemporary highlife instrumentation and arrangements.
Ekhator’s album “Omonabiese” stands as a testament to his artistic vision, featuring standout tracks like the title song “Omonabiese,” the melodious “Semwenrae,” the rhythmically complex “Omwenmwin Ghare,” and the captivating “Ighokpoya.” This collection showcases his signature approach of blending deeply rooted Edo rhythms with the sophisticated guitar work and horn arrangements characteristic of highlife music.
In 1983, Ugbo and His Philosophers Dance Band released their self-titled album, which further established their distinctive sound within Nigeria’s vibrant music scene.
