Ighonogie
The Uncle Brothers Band Of Benin
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dr. Alaska Agho and his Uncle Dance Band of Africa carved a prominent space within Nigeria’s highlife and soukous scene, establishing themselves as torchbearers of Edo musical traditions. Guided by the dynamic leadership of Dr. Alaska Agho, the band became celebrated for fusing indigenous West African rhythms with modern arrangements, producing an infectious style that resonated across Nigeria and throughout West Africa.
Their recording journey began with the 1979 release Obugie on Joromi Records, paving the way for a string of notable albums. Highlights included Sweet Darling (1981), Ighonogie (1981), and their landmark 1982 record Enikaro on Jaja Records. That project, with standout tracks such as Enikaro, Okpogha, Unuagbontokpa, and Ovbiye, perfectly showcased their blend of highlife guitar traditions with soukous-inspired grooves—balancing intricate musicianship with irresistible energy. Over time, they released around ten major works on labels such as Supremedisk, Matts Records, and Why Worry Records, solidifying their reputation for both consistency and innovation.
The Uncle Dance Band’s music was defined by dazzling guitar lines, layered percussion, and vocals that spoke to themes of love, society, and cultural pride. Their sound exemplified how highlife could adapt and evolve while staying rooted in African traditions. By the mid-1980s, they had become cultural ambassadors for Edo music, bringing it into dialogue with wider highlife and soukous movements of the region.
Their legacy continues to stand as one of creativity and bold artistry. Dr. Alaska Agho and his ensemble proved that music could simultaneously preserve tradition and embrace progress, leaving behind a catalog that remains essential to Nigeria’s highlife story.
