I Love Nigeria
Natty Andy
Natty Andy emerged in the early 1990s as part of the vibrant Nigerian roots reggae movement that had gained momentum throughout the previous decade. His three albums Chase Them Out (1991), Jah Jah Style (1992), and I Love Nigeria captured the tail end of roots reggae’s dominance before ragga and dancehall would reshape the Nigerian reggae landscape.
His debut Chase Them Out established Natty Andy’s credentials as a conscious roots artist, with tracks like “Rasta Man Never Die,” “Hungry Man,” and “Let’s Unite” addressing themes of Rastafarian identity, social inequality, and pan-African unity that defined the genre during Nigeria’s transition toward democratic rule. The album showed his commitment to authentic reggae production values, following in the tradition of artists like Ras Kimono and The Mandators who had brought Jamaican sounds to Nigerian soil.
Jah Jah Style deepened this spiritual focus with devotional tracks including “Good Morning Jah,” “Save I & I Soul,” and “Jah Is Love,” while “Kings City” and “Who Is Rasta” explored Rastafarian philosophy. The collaboration with Endy Rasta reflected the collaborative nature of Nigeria’s reggae scene, where musicians moved fluidly between different artists’ projects.
His third album I Love Nigeria marked a departure, incorporating more explicit Nigerian identity with songs like “Afrikans Wado” and “Ihwo Akpo” that drew from his Delta State roots, mixing reggae riddims with local linguistic and cultural elements. “Up Delta State” represented the regionalization of Nigerian reggae, as artists increasingly celebrated their specific ethnic and geographic identities within the broader Rastafarian framework that had given the genre its initial appeal.
