Vol. 3

King Kasumu Adio

Kasumu Adio, born in 1928 in Odo Yangade, Oke Agbo, Ijebu Igbo, emerged as one of the towering figures of Apala music, a Yoruba genre that grew into a vital form of artistic and cultural identity in the mid-1900s. Beginning his career in 1941 and entering the recording scene in 1948, he quickly distinguished himself as a voice that carried the weight of Yoruba tradition into the modern era. His songs, rich with proverbs and layered reflections, offered not only entertainment but also lessons, moral guidance, and commentary on the realities of his time. Adio’s strength as a musician came from his gift for transforming proverbial wisdom into poetic narratives that resonated across Yoruba society. His voice, both commanding and soulful, imbued his music with emotional and spiritual intensity. This was particularly evident in his tribute recordings, where he honored fallen leaders and addressed collective grief with dignity and depth. Two works, “Oloye Adekunle Fajuyi” and “The Late Owo-Ni-Fari,” brought him widespread acclaim, cementing his place as one of Apala’s most memorable voices. His partnership with Decca Records and other labels yielded an extensive catalog that chronicled his artistry over decades. Among his many releases were self-titled projects in 1972, followed by “Vol. 1” in 1978, “Vol. 2” in 1979, and “In the 60’s Vol. 1” in 1981. His singles and EPs highlighted his versatility, with enduring tracks such as “Ayinde Buraimoh,” “Late Fasasi Shoye,” “Ka Tepa Mose,” “Owo-Ni-Fari,” “Late Adeshewa Ogunde,” “Talubi Giwa,” “Orin Adelebo,” “Volume Nine,” “Ina Nfe Romi Fin,” “Iba Iya Mi,” “Isamo Leader,” and “Oriki Ibadan.” Through the work of Kasumu Adio & His Apala Group, Yoruba heritage found a strong and lasting voice. His artistry preserved the philosophical essence of Apala while passing down cultural values and wisdom, ensuring that the genre continues to inspire and educate long after his time.
