Someone to Love

Bassey Black & The Natty Messiah

Bassey Black and The Natty Messiah established themselves within Nigerian music across the 1980s and early 1990s. The group’s name, with “Natty Messiah” evokes Rastafarian cultural references, an engagement with reggae and indicated their pan-African consciousness that characterized much of Nigerian music during this period. The 1983 album Be My Lady presented a collection of dance-oriented records with romantic themes, including “Dance To The Music,” “Be My Lady,” “Baby, I Love You,” “Pretty Lady,” “Get Up And Groove,” and “Do It With Love.” The album’s focus on groove, love, and movement positioned the group within the disco and funk-influenced sounds popular in early 1980s Nigeria, where danceable rhythms dominated nightclubs and party circuits. No More War (1992) demonstrated a shift in the group’s creative approach. With singles like “I’m Waitin For You,” “Don’t Worry,” “B.B.B.,” “Kalangu,” and “Situation”, the album showcased a more personalized creative vision. The title No More War introduced socially conscious themes absent from their earlier work, reflecting broader shifts in Nigerian music as artists increasingly addressed political and social realities.
