Saliu Okobo & His Group

Salihu Okobo, also known by the name Yamusa Okobo, emerged in the 1970s as one of the key voices shaping Agale music within the Igala cultural scene. Hailing from Kogi State, he became a symbol of the genre’s growing diversity—challenging the dominance of the famed Paul Odi and proving that the Igala music tradition had room for more than one major star. Okobo’s artistry found expression through his recordings with Decca Records, where he released two influential albums that captured the energy and lyrical richness of his sound. His debut, released in 1975 (WAPS 257), featured a selection of tracks rooted in Igala rhythm and storytelling, including Ojo Fe Ne Doka, Omikatete Ajenumi, Akaba Jiyaba, Anaki Senebeje, and Ona Marida. The flip side included Umo Laki Sobe, Ijegede Abomikpaba, By Gon Is By Gon, and Ola Ogani, each song weaving together themes of love, community, and perseverance. In 1977, Okobo and his ensemble followed up with a second release (WAPS 374), a more ambitious project that deepened his social and cultural reflections. Side A contained Ile Me Ejaji Je, Ofanunwa, Alhaji Sankuri, Three Division, and Jabe Adan, while Side B included Amakuna Jugbeta, Murtala Fofejekinuwa Che, Alhaji Audu Maroko, Ageni Ofugo Ejema, and Ogu Ile Ankuri. Many of these songs paid homage to respected local personalities and referenced the shifting political and social realities of the time, reinforcing his role as both a musician and commentator. Sadly, Salihu Okobo’s life and career were cut short, as he passed away before his contemporary Paul Odi. Despite his brief time in the spotlight, his music remains a vital part of Igala cultural heritage, preserving the voice of a performer who helped redefine what Agale music could be.
