Chief Sally Young

The distinct beats of the Agogo and Ishaka mixed with sounds of guitars, drums and other instruments of highlife introduces Chief Daniel iriferi, also known as Mr. Sally Young. The iconic musician from Abraka in Delta, stormed the scene in the seventies, eighties and well into the early 2000s, singing with his urhobo dialect with his famous Lion Dance Band, performing timeless hits. Chief Young had one goal in mind, and that was promoting values alongside his culture. The songs had similarities with other highlife musicians of his time, speaking on important matters that bedevilled the society. They thrived with the local beats incorporated with western instruments. Songs like Ona Ụwa Kpọrọ? (Who owns life?), We Jai Fe ( let them succeed), Omo Ok, We ji Vwe Vwo, Agho Gho Mụ Vwo, Erhi Me Jị Vwo Nà, Onovbakpo, are some among the plethora of tracks he released. These songs had deep meanings, drawing from his real life experiences with the aim of reaching the masses. Everlasting beats still reigning to this day, saw Mr. Sally Young was active till his death, visited by young artists who sought permission to sample his iconic songs. Believing in the mission to keep urhobo music and culture alive, he was always welcoming to the young music enthusiasts. He found himself honored by his people and Royal dignitaries, who sought for his welfare in his old age, realizing just how much the Urhobo highlife king had contributed to both language and culture preservation. The legend was not just a musician but an avid storyteller. His songs carried listeners through a lot of emotions, creating vivid pictures. He died at an old age of 91 in 2024.
