Tickle Me
Alex Zitto
Nigerian singer, composer, and producer Alex Zitto is a popular figure in the Afrobeat and highlife music scenes. Zitto was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to Ghanaian and Nigerian parents. His mixed ancestry shaped his distinct musical style, which would eventually be popular throughout West Africa.
He started out as a guitarist before becoming a bassist for the renowned juju artist Ebenezer Obey. He gained important exposure to the music industry and a better understanding of traditional Nigerian musical traditions, especially the juju genre, thanks to this encounter with one of the country’s most renowned performers. But Zitto had hopes of being more than just a supporting artist and forging his own musical identity.
He made his breakthrough in 1988 when he entered the Lekki Song Contest and performed his original song, “Tickle Me.” He went from being a background musician to a well-known solo artist after the song won this prestigious competition. His song “Tickle Me” became a national anthem in Nigeria, bringing him great praise and solidifying his status as a gifted singer and songwriter.
Alex Zitto was well known for his unique fusion of pop, Afrobeat, highlife, and reggae music. His ability to blend African rhythms with reggae and funk influences, together with his soft voice and captivating melodies, gave him a distinctive sound that distinguished him from his peers.
“Walakolombo,” his sophomore album that solidified his status as one of Nigeria’s most sought-after musicians, and “Tickle Me,” which became his signature song, are among his most well-known songs. He worked with well-known musicians during his career, including as Ebenezer Obey, Ras Kimono, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, and King Sunny Ade.
Newer generations of musicians are still motivated by Alex Zitto’s legacy as a trailblazer who fused traditional African sounds with global influences, solidifying his place in Nigerian music history.
