Ighofose Brothers International
Ighofose Brothers International
Led by Peter Omoruyi, Ighofose Brothers International emerged during a transformative period for Edo music, releasing their self-titled album in 1977 as Edo funk was taking shape in Benin City. Edo funk was a new hybrid of intoxicating highlife that fused elements from native Edo culture with sounds from West African nightclubs. The group’s five-track collection showcases the musical landscape of mid-1970s Edo State, where traditional sounds were being electrified and modernized while maintaining deep connections to cultural roots.
The album opens with “Asakpuke” and “Nomabie” before transitioning to the trio of “Aiyagbonrule,” “Ekhorose,” and “Aiyomokhe” all sung in the Edo language. During this era, Chief Omoruyi was among the prominent pioneers of the Edo funk music genre, and Peter Omoruyi’s leadership of Ighofose Brothers International placed them within this vibrant creative community that included legends like Sir Victor Uwaifo, Osayomore Joseph, and Akaba Man.
Edo highlife musicians filled the role of traditional musicians by animating community ceremonies such as weddings and funerals, praising prominent members of the community, and Ighofose Brothers International participated in this essential social function. The music drew on traditional genres like asonogun, ojeke, agbi, ivbiagogo, and ekassa, with musicians continuing to incorporate instruments and styles from neighboring Yoruba communities and Western popular music. Their 1977 release captures this moment when Edo musicians were simultaneously preserving ancestral sounds and pushing boundaries, creating sustainable careers rooted in local communities while appealing to growing diaspora audiences abroad.
