Uncle Brothers Band Of Benin

The Uncle Brothers Band of Benin were a distinguished Nigerian highlife group from Benin City, renowned for their rich body of work and their vibrant interpretation of Edo musical traditions. Active from the late 1970s through the 1990s, the band earned acclaim for creating joyful, rhythmic music that celebrated their cultural heritage while captivating audiences with its danceable appeal. Their journey began in 1979 with the release of Obugie, an album that introduced their signature sound, a lively mix of storytelling, harmony, and traditional instrumentation. The record included songs such as “Obugie,” “Osa Simwionmwan,” “Oye Yao,” “Ebe N’Ovbe-Vbe,” “Nomasokpa,” and “Alice.” This debut established the group as one of the most exciting new voices in the Edo highlife scene. The early 1980s marked a prolific phase for the band. In 1981, they released Ighonogie, featuring “Ukpokpagbon,” “Ogieghele,” “Ighonogie,” and “Omonegbeda.” That same year, they followed up with Sweet Darling, an album that blended romance and rhythm through tracks like “Sweet Darling,” “No Ghakpokpima,” “Agbonirena,” and “Ibude.” Their creative energy continued with Enikaro (1982), which offered standout songs including “Enikaro,” “Okpogha,” “Ovbiye,” and “Unuagbontokpa.” Even into the 1990s, the band remained active and relevant, releasing Oyedo in 1992, proof of their enduring presence in Nigeria’s evolving music landscape. Their extensive catalog also featured records like Aimienrovbiye (which included “Iyenoguomwan,” “Edo,” and “Osagiator”), as well as notable albums such as Ozolua, Aimuagbonyowa, Edo Special, and Oniyen. Across decades of performance and recording, The Uncle Brothers Band of Benin upheld a commitment to cultural authenticity and artistic excellence.
