Egwu iji Ukwani
Umuchime Ogume Melodys Band
Umuchime Ogume Melodys Band were a pioneering musical group from Delta State, Nigeria, celebrated for their authentic interpretation of traditional Ukwuani highlife music. The group emerged during the vibrant Nigerian music scene of the mid-1970s, establishing themselves as distinctive voices in the regional highlife tradition.
The band made their recording debut in 1976 with their self-titled album Umuchime Ogume Melody, marking the beginning of a prolific period of creative output. They followed with another release on the same label in 1978, before expanding their reach through collaborations with various Nigerian record labels including Mikii and Ojikutu Records.
Their 1978 offering “Oluka N’Afu N’Anya,” released on Mikii, showcased the group’s commitment to preserving and promoting Ukwuani musical heritage. The band continued their productive streak with “Egwu Nde Eze” (1979) and “Egwu Iji Ukwani,” both released on Ojikutu Records, further cementing their role as cultural ambassadors for Ukwuani highlife.
Umuchime Ogume Melodys Band’s body of work stands as an important documentation of Delta State’s rich musical traditions, capturing the essence of Ukwuani culture through their spirited highlife interpretations.
