Sir Patrick Idahosa was a gifted Nigerian musician, composer, and guitarist from Edo State, whose artistry extended far beyond entertainment. Known for blending musical creativity with social awareness, Idahosa used his songs to comment on the challenges and triumphs of everyday life, earning respect as both an artist and an advocate for change.
A skilled multi-instrumentalist, Idahosa gained recognition at home and abroad for his mastery of numerous instruments and his distinctive approach to songwriting. His early single “Ironman / Umuonde,” released on Decca in 1974, introduced audiences to his rich sound and lyrical insight. Over a decade later, he returned with “Vol. One” (1985) on Crown Super Sonic Sound, backed by his dynamic ensemble, The African Sound Makers, marking a new phase in his musical evolution.
Beyond the stage and studio, Sir Patrick Idahosa played an influential role in the Edo music scene through his involvement with the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN). As a long-standing member and later Treasurer of the Edo PMAN Elders’ Forum, he dedicated himself to the welfare and unity of musicians, helping to build stronger structures for local artists and preserve Edo’s cultural heritage.
His artistry and leadership were later celebrated in the compilation “Greatest Hits Of Patrick Idahosa And His African Sound Makers,” released by Mossiac Music USA, ensuring that his songs and message continued to inspire future generations. Sir Patrick Idahosa’s legacy endures as that of a passionate artist, a master of sound, and a tireless champion of music as a force for social progress.
