Segun Adewale And His Superstars

Segun Adewale is a popular Nigerian musician renowned for pioneering a dynamic fusion of funk, jazz, juju, reggae, and Afrobeat he termed “Yo Pop”. Regardless of his family’s opposition to his musical aspirations, Segun Adewale moved to Lagos where he collaborated with popular juju musicians such as S. L. Atolagbe and I. K. Dairo. In the 1970s, he performed alongside Shina Peters and Prince Adekunle, trailblazers of JuJu music. Segun Adewale and Shina Peters co-founded the group Shina Adewale and the Superstars International in 1977. They delivered nine recordings before splitting in 1980 to pursue solo careers. After the split, Adewale assembled his own band, Segun Adewale and His Superstars International. By 1984, his music had evolved into Yo-Pop, characterized by its diverse blend of genres. Segun Adewale and His Superstars International cemented their place in music history with the hall of fame Juju album “Endurance,” a classic that houses timeless records like “Endurance, Pt. 1” and “Endurance, Pt. 2”. Adewale’s visionary and creative approach to JuJu music had a profound impact on the Nigerian music scene. No song captures his genius like the opening record to his 1983 album ‘Play for me’. The record titled ‘Yo Pop Music’ is a potpourri of sounds that takes signature instruments of other genres and combines them to melodic delight. With Yo-Pop, Segun Adewale experimented with sonics that would lay the groundwork for the contemporary Afropop sound. His innovative approach to blending traditional Yoruba rhythms with contemporary pop elements contributed to the genre’s future evolution.
