Fire De Burn
Rogana Ottah And His Black Heroes
The 1970s and 80s saw the rise of the Ukwuani style in Nigerian highlife, a funky fusion of the laidback, mellifluous guitar lines characteristic of Congolese and Igbo highlife with the rugged, animated rhythms of Edo Funk. The sound was pioneered by a number of indigenous superstars. One of those superstars was Issac Rogana Ottah.
Chief Isaac Rogana Ottah popularly known as the Oshio Super King hails from Akoku (Ugulu), Ukwuani LGA, Delta State. Rogana Ottah’s guitar mastery is said to be comparatively unparalleled in Nigeria’s rich musical history.
His musical career began in the early 1970s when he played in the bands of the legendary Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and Cardinal Rex Lawson. In 1973, he joined fellow Ndokwa native Charles Iwegbue and his Hino Sound Band, pursuing a solo music career after the tragic passing of Iwegbue in 1976. Rogana Ottah scored his first major hit with his first LP, Ukwani Special, in 1977.
He quickly followed his debut success with a series of outstanding albums notably the “Oshio Super” series which propelled Ottah to the pinnacle of the Nigerian music scene. While his recording career slowed after the 1980s, his presence continued to be highly demanded as a result of his lively and energetic stage presence. His career as a touring musician continued into the early years of the 21st century.
He has an extensive discography which is packed with notable albums. Among these albums are Ejeluno (1978), Money Hard to Get (1980), Anyi Bu Ofu (1982), Ifeloni Special (1982), and Oshio Super Four “Okwuedili” (1982).
