We Shall Win

Pogo Limited

Emerging in the late 1970s, Pogo Limited stood out as one of West Africa’s most thoughtful and spiritually driven reggae bands. At a time when energetic dance music dominated Nigerian clubs and radio, this Beninese-Nigerian collective offered something deeper—music that invited reflection, unity, and hope. Formed by musicians who had performed on the Nigerian Television Authority’s Music Panorama, the group quickly became known for weaving social commentary and spiritual insight into their songs, capturing the pulse of a continent in transition. Reggae had begun to take firm root in Nigeria by the late ’70s, and Pogo Limited became one of its most articulate voices. Often described as a “supergroup,” the band featured several seasoned performers: rhythm guitarist Emma Ogosi, bassist Robo Arigo, and singer Pat “Finn” Okonjo, formerly of The Hykkers. Together, they shaped a form of reggae that emphasised reflection and awakening rather than rebellion or festivity. Their music spoke to conscience, identity, and collective purpose, offering Nigerian audiences a new model for how African musicians could engage with reggae’s global message of liberation and faith. Their 1978 debut, We Shall Win, remains their defining statement. The album captured both the sound and spirit of a generation searching for meaning amid political and social uncertainty. Rather than leaning on reggae’s familiar protest tone, Pogo Limited used the genre as a vessel for optimism and self-examination. The seven-track collection opened with Switch Your Lights On, a meditative piece about love and moral clarity. Iyobele and Akwa Alili blended traditional West African melodies with reggae grooves, while the dual versions of Together envisioned a united and prosperous Africa. Something Must Be Done reflected on family, legacy, and hope for longevity, and the title track We Shall Win delivered an anthem of triumph inspired by movements for freedom across southern Africa. The band’s lyrics and arrangements revealed a deep belief in music’s power to heal and uplift. Themes of peace, solidarity, and moral renewal ran throughout the record, while its instrumental foundation—steady basslines, interlocking guitar riffs, and gentle percussion—reflected both Jamaican roots reggae and distinctly West African phrasing. Pogo Limited didn’t just imitate a style; they reinterpreted it, infusing reggae with local languages, rhythms, and spiritual overtones. Ironically, the band’s message of justice and perseverance was later co-opted by the Nigerian political elite. In 1983, We Shall Win was used as a campaign anthem by the ruling party during an election widely condemned as fraudulent—an appropriation that sharply contradicted the song’s intent. Still, the music’s original meaning endured, symbolizing the people’s resilience and hope for genuine progress. Through their brief but powerful existence, Pogo Limited helped redefine what reggae could mean in an African context. We Shall Win showed that popular music could challenge injustice and still inspire joy and faith. By merging spiritual depth with refined musicianship, the band created a body of work that remains both sonically rich and morally resonant—an enduring testament to how African artists reshaped global sounds to express their own dreams and realities.
