The "7" Brothers Super Hits
Otokiti And His Seven Brothers Dance Band
Otokiti and His Seven Brothers Dance Band was a popular Nigerian musical group that gained popularity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The band’s distinct sound was a fusion of traditional Igbo highlife music that merged traditional African rhythms with modern elements. The band contributed massively to the extreme popularity of highlife music in Nigeria.
The band was led by Friday Onofe affectionately known as Otokiti. Otokiti was the propelling force behind the band’s incredible success. The Esan native’s forward thinking leadership and creative direction played a pivotal role in defining the sound and style of the band. Under his guidance, the band was able to deliver music that connected with audiences across Nigeria.
The band’s debut album, Otokiti & Seven Brothers, was released in 1977 to fanfare. What followed was massive commercial success that shot the group up to superstardom, with the album’s refreshing brand of highlife resonating with listeners and is now heralded as one of the great works in the genre.
Following the success of their debut album, the band released their sophomore album, The 7 Brothers Super Hits, in 1981, which essentially cemented their place in the highlife genre and placed them in the upper echelon of Nigeria’s top musical acts.
Throughout their career, Otokiti and His Seven Brothers Dance Band were also popular for their energetic live performances. While the band delivered entertaining music, the music remained deeply rooted in Igbo culture.
Otokiti and His Seven Brothers Dance Band are remembered as one of the most beloved Nigerian musical acts of the late 1970s and early 1980s. ‘
