Bridge over The Congo
Orchestre T.P.O.K. Jazz, Les Bantous De La Capitale
Luambo Makiadi, affectionately called Franco, was one of the most iconic figures in African music and a key contributor to the evolution of modern Congolese rumba. He led the legendary T.P.O.K. (Tout Puissant Orchestre Kinshasa) jazz band, one which is widely recognized as one of the most influential groups in African music history.
François Luambo Luanzo Makiadi was born on July 6, 1938, in Sona Bata, near Léopoldville (now Kinshasa), in the Belgian Congo, which is currently the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He began his music career at a tender age, learning the guitar as a child. By the time he turned 12, young Franco was already performing with popular musicians in Kinshasa.
He enjoyed national recognition as a result of his exceptional skills as a guitarist, composer and bandleader. Shortly after he co-founded the Kinshasa-based T.P.O.K. Jazz in 1956 with Jean Serge Essous and other musicians, the group quickly became synonymous with Congolese rumba.
T.P.O.K. Jazz was a collective of skilled musicians including singers, guitarists, horn players, and percussionists. The lineup of the group evolved as time went on with legendary members like Simaro Lutumba, Josky Kiambukuta, Madilu System, Ndombe Opetum and others joining the group.
Franco and T.P.O.K. Jazz played a significant role in popularizing the Congolese rumba, eventually blending its Cuban influence to achieve a fast paced and danceable soukous style. Franco’s music was revered for its deep storytelling with lyrics that revolved around social, political, and personal themes and cut across love and morality. Often discussing controversial issues which made him resonate deeply with his listeners, he was also musically influential as his guitar technique set a standard for Congolese guitarists.
The group enjoyed international recognition and took their music around the world touring extensively across Africa and Europe bringing Congolese music to a new and global audience. Franco sadly passed away in 1989 at the age of 51 and afterwards, the group struggled to reach the heights that Franco had guided them to and eventually went their separate ways in the 1990s. The group symbolized the vibrancy of African music and set the standard for African music, influencing generations of musicians across the continent.
