The contributions of instrumentalists, song writers, backup singers are often overlooked, so much so that certain songs that deserve their credits— are not given to whom it’s due. The life of Monday Olufemi John, a talented guitarist, shows just how important everyone is to the creation of music. Remembered as Ebenezer Obey’s guitarist, we will learn that he indeed left a legacy that was solely his. The fine art illustrator started with playing his guitar as a hobby. Born in 1945 Lagos, he grew up surrounded by music, highlife and Jazz respectively. He kept on working on Art, till the 60s, when he left permanently to pursue music. He started with highlife, joining Roy Gabriel’s band, then left to join Bobby Benson. It was during this time he experimented with his tunes, creating a solo album that featured members of Bobby’s band. In 1968, he left highlife for Juju music, joining Tunde Nightingale as a guitarist. He performed with him all over the world, ultimately touring the UK, where Ebenezer Obey first met him. Dazzled by his performance, he encouraged him to become a pioneer member of the Inter Reformers in 1971. His career with Ebenezer spanned a total of 6-7 years, of which he produced 28 albums with him. He then retired from music. Music however couldn’t get enough of him and so he returned in 1984, with his own band, New Wave JuJu Band. A five man band, that featured other great artists that would come to be known. The band then moved to Chicago and after a while, he permanently resided in London. He died in 2012 after a battle with a stroke. He left a great legacy behind as a lot of people showed up to pay their last respects to an admirable instrumentalist.
