Lokassa, Cava Techico Et Le Asikapela

Lokassa Ya M’Bongo is a legendary Congolese guitarist and bandleader known for his important contributions to Congolese music, especially in the genre of Soukous. He was born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo and would eventually become one of the most revered guitarists in African music. Lokassa began his professional career as a guitarist in Kinshasa during the 1960s, an era when Congolese rumba and soukous music was the trending sound. He became a part of Tabu Ley Rochereau’s Afrisa International band in the 1970s, joining as a guitarist. This was the starting point of his rise to fame as he played crucial roles in creating hit songs that blended melodic guitar chords with the pulsating rhythms of Congolese rumba. After finding success as part of the band, Lokassa took a bold step leaving Afrisa International and formed the Soukous Stars, a band that other prominent musicians like Nyboma Mwan’dido and Ballou Canta were a part of. The band quickly began enjoying international recognition for their contemporary soukous sound defined by infectious guitar riffs and fast-paced beats. They toured far and wide and delivered hits such as “Maria Jose” and “La Vie des Hommes”. Lokassa was popular for his guitar playing which combined traditional Congolese melodies with modern sensibilities. His guitar often employed clean melodic progressions that became a defining feature of soukous. His contributions to the genre was a defining factor in the popularity of Congolese music across Africa and Europe. His influence can be heard in the work of contemporary African artists who are inspired by the tradition of soukous. Lokassa Ya M’Bongo retired from active music in the 2000s due to health issues. He would eventually pass away on March 14, 2023, in Nashua, New Hampshire, USA at the age of 76. His death was the sad loss of an important personality in African music. He is fondly remembered for his lasting contributions to the recognition of Congolese soukous globally.
