Ken Nwofor emerged during a pivotal period for Igbo highlife, a contemporary musical genre that combines highlife and Igbo traditional music. His two albums, Egwum (1986) and Africans Re-Think (1987), captured the spirit of mid-1980s southeastern Nigeria as Igbo highlife continued to evoke the peculiar mood of the times, particularly following the revival of egwu ekpili traditional music that characterized the decade. Egwum opens with “Ogomegbunam” and “Alu Na Mpu” before transitioning to the title track and “Osi N’Akala Aka,” all sung in Igbo and reflecting the philosophical depth common to the genre. The album title itself Egwum (dance/music) speaks to the centrality of rhythm and movement in Igbo musical culture. Traditional Igbo music was rhythmical, with instruments like Udu (pot drum), Ekwe (slit drum), Olu & Ogene (gongs), and Oja (wind flute) used to create unique polyrhythmic beats in a call-and-response manner, elements that influenced Nwofor’s sound even as he modernized the approach with guitar and brass. His follow-up, Africans Re-Think, took a more outward-looking perspective with its title track calling for continental reflection and tracks like “Nkenuwa” balancing Igbo lyrics with the Pidgin English of “Who Go Better Go Better” and “Ko Ko Ma.” Released during Nigeria’s tumultuous mid-1980s economic and political landscape, these albums positioned Nwofor within the tradition of Igbo musicians who used their art to document and comment on contemporary realities while maintaining deep connections to cultural roots.
