After founder Godwin Kabaka Opara bravely left the renowned Oriental Brothers Band International in 1977, Kabaka International Guitar Band became a major influence in Nigerian highlife music. This momentous split signalled the start of a musical adventure that would forever alter Nigerian musical heritage and Igbo highlife music. Kabaka International Guitar Band, which was founded in the thriving Nigerian music scene of the 1970s, set itself apart with a sophisticated blend of traditional Igbo rhythms, Eastern Congolese-style guitar techniques, and traditional highlife components. Godwin Kabaka Opara was dedicated to what he referred to as “standard highlife”—music that went beyond simple enjoyment and had depth, narrative, and technical intricacy. His guitar playing, which combined highlife frameworks with Congolese rumba influences, gave the band a unique sound that distinguished them from their peers. In contrast to the huge earnings obtained by record executives, he described getting as little as 25 kobo per album.
