Johnson Adjan & His Opiri Group Of Orhokpo
The Urhobo are known for their rich culture and ability to use their language to promote the beauty inherent. Johnson Osetejovwore Oyibode Adjan also known as the Ogburine, is a native of Ofuoma-ughelli. He grew up around his ancestral religion, following his parents for worship in their sect. This influenced his music greatly as his songs were a rendition of his culture.
The legendary singer used satire, proverbs, idioms to talk about matters in the society. Some include Somodudi , that spoke against reckless drinking, Idi Me, that promoted modest drinking amongst friends, Omoromuoseje, Aye me nu vwobo, Egbe Me-Fure, Me-Ra-Ighorokpe, Urukpe Oye Gbe Nene, Woman Olorogun, are a few among others. He was mentored by Chief Omokomoke and Chief Djanere in Urhobo music. His songs circled round not just culture but day to day living creating a philosophical conversation in his music.
His career was successful with a tour in London, and a professorship. He ruled the 80s and 90s alongside other legendary highlife singers. Turning 80 in 2024, the Urhobo people celebrated him, praising his contributions towards keeping their culture and language alive. He currently resides in Ughelli, Delta State.
