Inolaji Abigun Ibidokun And His Adaiyeba Sound

Inaolaji Adigun Ibidokun and his Adaiyeba Sound emerged from the rich tapestry of Yoruba musical traditions in southwestern Nigeria, releasing their self-titled album in 1977 during a transformative period for Nigerian music and society. The twelve-track collection captures the essence of Yoruba music, which traditionally centred on folklore and spiritual worship, utilising the polyrhythmic drumming patterns and tonal inflections that define the region’s sound. The album’s opening tracks “E Ma Fewa Pelu Owo” (Don’t Use Money to Play) and “Bi Igba Ba Do Jude A O Shi” reflect the philosophical and socially conscious lyrical approach common to Yoruba musicians of this era. Most poignantly, the album includes singles like “Iku Muritala Ogagun” (The Death of Murtala the Warrior), a tribute to General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, Nigeria’s military head of state who was assassinated on February 13, 1976. Murtala was killed in his Mercedes-Benz while traveling through Lagos traffic near the Federal Secretariat at Ikoyi, ambushed by soldiers led by Lt. Col. Bukar Suka Dimka. The inclusion of this commemorative piece positions the album within the tradition of Yoruba musicians serving as social commentators and praise-singers, documenting significant historical events and honouring prominent figures in their communities. Other tracks like “Mo Ni Moto Lode” (I Have a Car Outside) and “Moto Titun” (New Car) capture the aspirations of post-independence Nigeria, while “Alhaji Mogaji” and “Egbe Iwajowa” demonstrate the praise-singing tradition that remains central to Yoruba musical culture.
