Felix Lebarty, known professionally as “Lover Boy,” was a prominent Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer who achieved significant success throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Born in Edo State, Nigeria, Lebarty emerged as one of the most recognizable voices in Nigerian popular music, particularly celebrated within the Igbo community of Eastern Nigeria for his romantic ballads and cultural tributes.
Lebarty’s musical journey began under the influence of his older brother, highlife musician Aigbe Lebarty, before launching his solo career in 1979 with the album “Girls For Sale.” His breakthrough came with the 1982 release “Lover Boy,” whose title track became so popular that it transformed into his permanent stage moniker. His music was characterised by smooth vocals, guitar-driven arrangements, and heartfelt lyrics that often celebrated Igbo women through songs like “Ego,” “Chi-Chi,” “Ada,” “Uchenna,” “Ngozi,” and “Nneka.”
The pinnacle of Lebarty’s recording career arrived with his 1989 album “One Life To Live,” which featured his signature song “Ifeoma.” This track became his most enduring hit and cemented his status as a romantic crooner, with the song later gaining renewed recognition when featured in the 2021 film “Swallow.” Throughout his secular music career, which spanned over a decade, Lebarty released numerous albums including “Bobo” (1984), “African Boy” (1986), and “Better Be Sure” (1991), before concluding with his final secular album “419” in 1992.
Working with respected labels such as Tabansi and EMI Nigeria, Lebarty’s music resonated deeply with audiences seeking both danceable rhythms and emotional connection. His songs combined contemporary Nigerian sounds with traditional highlife influences, creating a distinctive style that appealed to both local and diaspora communities.
Felix Lebarty’s contribution to Nigerian music during the golden era of the 1980s established him as a significant figure in the country’s popular music landscape, with his romantic ballads and cultural celebrations leaving a lasting impact on the genre.
