Ewheyanudje Otubure And His Star Band Of Orhakpor

Ewheyanudje Otubure and His Star Band of Orhakpor established themselves as representatives of Urhobo traditional music from the Niger Delta region between 1983 and 1987. The 1983 self-titled debut album featured tracks like “Delta Social Club,” “Uyere Gbidi,” “Madam Edogbo,” and “Ejekor.” The opening track’s reference to “Delta Social Club” demonstrates the band’s connection to the social club culture which was prevalent in Nigerian communities at the time. In that era, cultural organizations served as patrons and audiences for traditional music. The dedication to “Madam Edogbo” follows the praise-singing tradition common in Urhobo music, honoring specific community members through song. In 1986, the group released Oghene Bi Ko. The four tracks, “Oghene Bi Ko,” “To Me Ti Quaya Me,” “Augustin Uloho,” and “Quaya Vwa Do,” combined spiritual invocations with personal dedications, maintaining the dual function of Urhobo traditional music as both spiritual expression and social documentation. The 1987 album Bulldozer – Adjust Your Yanch marked a shift as the band made an attempt to reach broader audiences beyond the Urhobo-speaking community. The tracks “Eke Ri Me Hwa,” “Ne Ne Ria Kpo Rhe,” “Imu Vwie Club Of Nigeria,” and “Imu Vwie Gha” continued the pattern of referencing social organizations, with “Imu Vwie Club Of Nigeria” honoring another cultural association. The album Last Voice Of Ewheyanu maintained the Urhobo tradition throughout, preserving linguistic and cultural continuity across the band’s discography. Ewheyanudje Otubure’s prolific output during the 1980s positioned him within a generation of Delta State musicians who documented Urhobo cultural life creating music that defined Urhobo identity during a period of rapid modernization in Nigeria.
