Omo Ode
Emperor Pick Peters & His Seidor International Band
Emperor Pick Peters & His Seidor System, also known as the “Seidormatic System,” was a prominent Nigerian Juju music band that rose to fame during the 1970s. Led by Peter Akanni Akorede, who performed under the regal moniker “Emperor Pick Peters,” the group became one of the defining acts of the golden era of Juju music, earning widespread recognition alongside contemporaries like King Sunny Ade and Dele Abiodun.
Founded by Emperor Pick Peters in 1973, the band quickly established themselves with their debut album “Kango Kango l’agogo n dun,” which showcased their distinctive sound characterised by immersive instrumentals and resonant, meaningful lyrics. The Emperor, also known as the “Wizard Guitarist,” demonstrated exceptional skill on the guitar while serving as the group’s primary songwriter, performer, and visionary leader. His musical prowess and entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Identity Records, giving him greater control over his artistic output.
The band’s sound epitomised the mellow Juju style of the era, featuring intricate guitar work, traditional Yoruba percussion, and vocals that seamlessly blended spiritual themes with social commentary. Notable releases included “Omo Ode, Wa Gba” (1980) and tracks such as “Peter L’aja Kan” and “Omo Ode De,” which demonstrated their ability to craft both danceable rhythms and contemplative musical journeys.
Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Emperor Pick Peters & His Seidor System released over 20 albums, establishing a prolific recording career that contributed significantly to the evolution of Juju music. Their work reflected the sophistication and cultural depth that characterized the genre during its most influential period, with lyrics often exploring themes of destiny, spirituality, and social relationships.
Emperor Pick Peters & His Seidor System’s legacy remains an integral part of Nigerian music history, representing the creative peak of Juju music and the era’s innovative fusion of traditional Yoruba musical elements with modern recording techniques and arrangements.
