Eddy Maxwell's Odoyewu International Band Of Ghana

The Odoyewu International Band of Ghana, under the leadership of Eddy Maxwell, represented a unique chapter in the history of West African highlife. Formed in 1957, the group became widely recognized in the early 1980s for their ability to bridge Ghanaian musical traditions with Nigeria’s booming recording industry, where much of their work was produced. This cross-cultural positioning allowed them to appeal to audiences in both countries while maintaining an authentic Ghanaian identity. Their breakthrough came with the 1981 debut album My Business, released under CY Records in Nigeria. The following year, they achieved even greater success with Monkey Chopp, which remains one of their defining works thanks to its witty social commentary and irresistible groove. Further projects like Endurance (1982, S.L. Records) and the 1983 releases One Man – One Car and Fear Woman Eddy Maxwell’s ‘84 confirmed their ability to merge entertainment with pointed reflections on everyday realities. By 1984, the band had embraced explicitly pan-African themes with their release No Tribalism, a project that underscored their belief in unity across ethnic and national boundaries. Notable tracks like Monkey Chopp, My Business, and Fear Woman became staples in both Ghanaian and Nigerian highlife circles, balancing humor, social awareness, and melodic richness. The Odoyewu International Band’s approach demonstrated how highlife could serve as both cultural preservation and social critique. Eddy Maxwell’s leadership ensured that their music carried lasting influence, contributing to the golden era of West African popular music while leaving a legacy of songs that remain culturally and musically significant.
