Chief Iney Ugussey, The Isoko Lyric Master's Band, Lagos

Chief Iney Ugussey was an accomplished Nigerian musician known for his contributions to highlife music and his contribution to the preservation of Isoko music and culture. Leading The Isoko Lyric Master’s Band, he released several notable albums from the 1970s through to the 1980s amassing a cult following in the process. Ikpereza which was released in 1980 exemplifies Ugussey’s early work, blending traditional Isoko sounds with contemporary highlife rhythms and showcasing the band’s futuristic musical style as well as incorporating rich lyrical content reflective of Isoko culture. His second album Onojakaroma features popular songs like “Onojakaroma,” “Emeroboghene,” “Emegaviera,” “Ezimeyo,” and “Kromaga Rewe Koko Igho,” which Ugussey’s lyrical mastery and the band’s instrumental prowess. Beyond his musical achievements, Chief Iney Ugussey held the esteemed title of “Oketa of Okpe Isoko,” underscoring his cultural significance and leadership within his community. His legacy continues to be celebrated, as evidenced by tributes and remembrances from family and fans alike
