The Voice of Owan
Chief I. I. Ayeni And His Group
Chief I. I. Ayeni, commonly known as Ayeni Ora, was a famed Nigerian highlife musician from Ora in the former Bendel State (now Edo State). Leading his acclaimed musical group known as Chief I. I. Ayeni & His Group, he became one of the most revered figures in the traditional highlife scene, flourishing especially during the 1970s and 1980s, when West African music was experiencing a golden era of creativity and international recognition.
Chief Ayeni and his group were praised for their unique approach to highlife music, which featured slow, soulful, and deeply traditional sounds that provided an almost spiritual listening experience. Unlike many of their contemporaries, who pursued more dynamic and commercial techniques, Chief Ayeni’s music had a quiet, contemplative sound that made listeners feel as if “the whole world slowed down” when his songs played. This distinct look set them out in the thriving Nigerian music scene of the time.
The group’s artistic concept was based on storytelling via song, incorporating storylines about their people, land, love, and difficulties into works that struck a chord with audiences. Their sound was defined as music that not only entertained but also made people feel, generating an atmosphere of absolute tranquillity and emotional connection that felt like home to listeners across Nigeria and beyond.
Chief I. I. Ayeni & His Group recorded multiple albums on the prestigious Ijebor Records label, which was one of the most prominent recording firms for traditional Nigerian music during their time. Their significant recordings include the critically acclaimed Ora Traditional Songs Vol. 1, which demonstrated their knowledge of traditional Ora musical genres, and Ohua Nugbese, an album that displayed their quiet, spiritual approach to highlife. In 1981, the group produced Ebako Alie, which had a funkier edge while retaining the emotional weight and traditional base that defined their characteristic sound. Another notable release was Ora Traditional Highlife Vol. 6 in 1979, which demonstrated their commitment to maintaining and expanding traditional musical styles.
Among his most impactful songs that resonated deeply with audiences during their time were tracks like Zedomi Da – Oya Nu Mie, Odede Reki No Vbi Ime, Ojeboro Gbeme Adesua, Izuyon Negbe Me, Mo Mo Mo Egbe Me Mo, Oukha so Khoisa Ukpo, and Ivbio Wan, which showcased the timeless quality of his compositions and their profound connection with listeners across generations.
Chief Ayeni’s music became ingrained in the cultural fabric of many Nigerian households, acting not only as background entertainment but also as “part of the air people breathed” – a constant rhythm and familiar spirit that permeated daily life. His records were renowned to elicit deep contemplation.
The group’s ability to combine traditional highlife with profound tranquilly and ease, led to musical encounters that went beyond ordinary entertainment to become spiritual and emotional journeys. They were masters at creating music that was strongly related to place and heritage while staying globally accessible and emotionally compelling.
Together with his group, Chief I. I. Ayeni’s efforts to preserve and advance Ora traditional music cemented his status as giants in the Nigerian music canon, whose profound influence continues to ring true for younger generations learning about West Africa’s rich musical legacy.
