Alhaji Jaiyegbade Alao and His Pankeke Group
Around the 1920s, Alhaji Muhammad Àmínù Kúrángà, also called Jáígbadé Àlàó, was born in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State. He was from Bàbá Òyó Compound, which is located in the Òkè-Anífowóse section of Ilorin’s well-known Pàkátà neighbourhood. His mother, Madam Salamatu, was from Maleke Compound, Jagun Quarters, Okelele area, Ilorin, while his father, Mallam Kuranga, was a farmer.
Joining the band of Akano Oloru, a professional musician from Oloru in the modern-day Moro Local Government Area, marked the beginning of his musical career. While the band performed along the Ogbomoso-Oyo Road in the Gambari Village area, Jaigbade trained and honed his musical abilities under Akano’s guidance. He founded his own Dadakuwada Music Group approximately eight decades ago after finishing his musical training.
Two of Ilorin’s most enduring traditional music forms, Dadakuwada and Pankeke, were both invented and perfected by Jaigbade. His music stood out from modern secular music because of its moral lessons, philosophical undertones, and profound spirituality. Among the groups he performed with were “Alhaji Chief Jaigbade Alao And His Amuludun Of Kwara State” and “Alhaji Chief Jaigbade Alao & His Pankeke Group.” During the 1970s and 1980s, the traditional music scene was characterised by professional conflicts between him and his colleagues, Alhaji Odolaye Aremu and Alhaji Aremu Osee.
The 9th Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Sulu Gambari, selected and turbaned him as the first Oba Olorin (Head of Musicians) of Ilorin in 1990, formally acknowledging his extraordinary talent and leadership in traditional music. The well-known Ijala singer Ogundare Foyanmu was among the admirers and colleagues that graced the 1991 turbaning event.
Jaigbade recorded no fewer than 47 musical albums and gave innumerable live performances during his storied career. He became the sole performer of his genre to tour outside of Nigeria when he brought his band to the United States in 2008 and Brazil in 2011, bringing his music to a global audience. It was Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah who organised these tours.
He received numerous accolades for his contributions to music and culture, including an honorary doctorate from Kwara State University in 2018 and an anniversary award from the Kwara State Government in 2017. He wrote songs for many Ilorin celebrities and elites, including as Alhaji Yakubu Amori Gobir, Justice Saka Yusuf, and global business magnate Alhaji Umaru Aminu Saro.
Among the albums in Jaigbade’s noteworthy discography are those titled “Alhaji Chief Jaigbade Alao And His Amuludun Of Kwara State” and “Alhaji Chief Jaigbade Alao & His Pankeke Group (The Amuludun Of Kware State).” With twelve tracks, including hit singles like “Adisa Odun-Ade,” “Mo Mu ‘Number’ Temi,” “Oladimeji Arowomale Omo-Egbin,” “Ete Awo Ni Ete Egberi,” “Abere Alate, On Ate Ni,” “Asayan Oro,” and “Alhaji Salimanu Moloko,” his most well-known release is “Vol. 21 – Mo Mu ‘Number’ Temi” on Chief Records. “Ko Le Ba Wa Logigi,” “Alhaji Umoru Sharo,” “Eje Ka Se Arawa Jeje,” “Ati Ni Orin Tuntun, A Si Ni Ilu Tuntun,” along with “Alhaji Ajibaye Balogun Share.” Many of these songs were written as tributes to notable Ilorin leaders and dignitaries.
His 1991 album on Chief Records further showcased his mastery of traditional Ilorin music styles. His music remained consistently clean, philosophical, and free from profanity, offering wisdom and moral guidance to listeners.
On March 20, 2023, Alhaji Jaigbade Alao passed away. His children, Muhammad Jamiu Jaigbade and Ajarat Asabi Jaigbade, have carried on his musical heritage. His status as the final and finest representative of this ancient genre is cemented by his unrivalled influence on Dadakuwada music and Ilorin’s cultural legacy.
