Agu Risky

In the 1980s, Agu Risky, a well-known Nigerian highlife guitarist and musician, rose to prominence in the Ukwuani and Igbo highlife scenes. Under the direction of Love King A.U. Ubulu, he developed his guitar talents while playing with the well-known King Ubulu International Band, where he started his musical career. Agu Risky’s guitar playing became a crucial component of the band’s unique sound, making them one of the most renowned bands in the Ukwuani highlife genre. However, Agu Risky encountered difficulties operating within a preexisting group structure, much like many other gifted musicians of his time. Agu Risky bravely decided to leave the King Ubulu International Band and follow his own musical vision after a falling out with Love A.U. (King Ubulu), the band’s leader and frontman. His career took a significant shift after this move, which helped him forge his own musical legacy. Agu Risky embraced his independence and formed “Agu Risky And De Lovers International” which would serve as his main musical outlet during the 1980s. His transition from sideman to bandleader was exemplified by the ensemble, which gave him the chance to demonstrate not only his extraordinary guitar playing but also his compositional and arranging capabilities. The group rose to prominence in Nigeria’s highlife scene under his direction.. Agu Risky was well known for his explosive guitar playing and his ability to combine modern highlife rhythms with traditional Igbo and Ukwuani musical themes. His mostly Igbo-sung music frequently had narrative components that struck a strong chord with listeners throughout southeast Nigeria. Throughout the region, the band was a favourite for dance events, festivals, and social gatherings due to their upbeat performances and Agu Risky’s captivating stage appearance. His most popular records include “Wese Osonmi”, “Ochi Oke Egba” and “Adango Ebibifu” all of which demonstrated his developed artistic vision and made him a highly skilled solo performer. His impact and reach were subsequently increased by other noteworthy releases like “Chimekwene Uya”, “Mummy Special” and “Chukwu Ke Nu Uwa Nu Udo.” Agu Risky’s impact went beyond his own recordings when he left the King Ubulu International Band, opening doors for other artists. One such player was the legendary Cameroonian guitarist Charles Boumda, who was brought in to cover for him. One of the most significant bands in Nigerian highlife music history is still Agu Risky and De Lovers International. His reputation as a trailblazer who made the seamless transition from band member to renowned bandleader and recording artist is cemented by the fact that his legacy continues to impact guitarists and highlife musicians throughout West Africa.
