Egwu Okwonma Awka
Anakweze Nmadueke
Anakweze Nmadueke emerged from the rich tradition of Igbo folk music, releasing his album Egwu Okwonma Awka in 1977. The title itself, which references Awka, a prominent town in Anambra State known historically as a center of blacksmithing and craftsmanship, immediately grounds the music in a specific cultural and geographical context within Igboland.
Working during the post-civil war period when Igbo musicians were rebuilding cultural infrastructure and reasserting regional identity through music, Nmadueke’s work represents the continuation of indigenous musical traditions that existed parallel to the more commercially visible highlife genre. The six tracks on Egwu Okwonma Awka, “Oraeke Nwenendu,” “Egede Rudo Uno,” “Orauno Nwaumekwulu,” “Obodo Isinyi,” “Ukwu Walu Ogodo Aduro Nma Egba Oto,” and “Ayaghayagha Ogbonma” are packed with storytelling, proverbs, and community narratives central to Igbo oral tradition.
The album’s which was quite different from the guitar band highlife that dominated southeastern Nigeria’s commercial music scene in the late 1970s. His music often accompanied festivals, ceremonies and community gatherings where the maintenance of cultural continuity held particular importance in the years following Nigeria’s civil war.
Nmadueke’s work stands as a document of Igbo cultural expression from a transformative period, capturing musical traditions that existed in everyday village life and ceremonial contexts, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
