The Evergreens of Paul Ede

Paul Ede

Paul Ede was a pioneering Nigerian highlife musician from the old Bendel State (now Edo State) whose guitar-driven sound helped define the Edo strand of highlife in the 1970s. As the leader of the Edorisiagbon Musical Union, Ede blended traditional Edo rhythms and language with the broader West African highlife style, crafting a sound that was both culturally grounded and widely appealing. His early success came with the 1970 single Ai Mieno Oh on the Philips label, followed by numerous recordings that showcased his lyrical depth and musical finesse. Songs such as Emota, Oguegue, Olatoro, Ade Sua, Imarueghe, and Gbe Ye Gbe Alo reflected his creativity and deep ties to Edo culture. Through his melodic guitar lines, steady percussion, and vibrant horn arrangements, Ede gave highlife a distinctly Edo flavor while maintaining its universal charm. Paul Ede’s work explored themes of love, morality, and community life, using music as a medium to celebrate Edo identity and preserve its language and traditions. His collaborations with major Nigerian labels like Philips-West African Records, Akpola, and Nigerphone ensured his influence spread across the country. Today, he is remembered as a foundational figure in Edo highlife, whose innovative approach demonstrated how regional sounds could shape and enrich the evolution of Nigerian popular music.
