Edosoghe Union Egboko
Edosoghe Union Egboko released three albums between 1976 and 1979, documenting traditional Edo music from Benin City. Delivering two albums in 1976, the group’s output included songs like “Okpa Ugo Vbe Bue Khin,” “Okperonmwon,” “Alubase,” “Edenighayere,” “Ighade – Ariavbehe,” and “Erhano-Yan.” The songs references historical figures, places, and cultural concepts significant to Edo heritage. “Okperonmwon,” for instance, shares its name with a historical Oba of Benin, connecting the music to royal lineage and historical memory.
By 1979, the group released a third album with tracks “Ozede,” “Ehi,” and “Omonehunde.” The term “Ehi” holds spiritual significance in Edo cosmology, referring to one’s spiritual counterpart or guardian spirit, indicating the music’s engagement with traditional Edo religious and philosophical concepts.
The group played an active role in cultural preservation during a period when traditional music competed with highlife, Afrobeat, and other popular genres for audience attention.
