Echo Toikumo And The Fisher Brothers
The Ijaws are forever grateful to the legacy left behind by the music maestro, Chief Echo Eoyerigha Toikumo Lubo. The late Chief Echo, was from Argo, Ijo Ibe. An avid activist for the emancipation of the Niger Deltans, he came from a lot of struggle. He lost his father at age 12, which left him unable to finish school, but at some point, he went to Benin and got to Grade 2. At age 20, he got into music.
The road to music wasn’t easy, regardless he persevered, motivated by the late Cardinal Jim Rex Lawson. Penniless, he formed the Echo and Arogbo Fisher Brother’s Band— but money could not deter him. He continued to perform with his band, till his name began to resonate with not just Ijaws, but Nigerians everywhere. He fought for his people through his music and everything he found unreasonable with his society. Oppression against women, unreasonable archaic cultural practices, death, were few of the topics that regulated his songs.
Nicknamed Field Marshal, his songs were delivered in Ijaws and English, reaching a wide audience due to his versatility. Some of his notable tracks include: Earlier the Better, Ino Mo Weri, Dirimo Ere, Balagha, Hallelo-Ya, Gbaraun Egbsu, Uwebo Wodighi. He revolutionized Ijaw Highlife, creating lasting music that still resonates with society today. At his burial in 2007, the people of Ijaw threw a grand celebration of the exceptional life he lived.
