Iruemwense
Collins Oke & His Odoligie Nobles
Collins Oke Elaiho & His Odoligie Nobles Dance Band were among the most dynamic forces of Nigerian highlife during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in 1920 in Edo State, Elaiho became a visionary bandleader whose innovative blending of African rhythms and Western sounds placed him at the heart of highlife’s golden era.
Raised in Edo’s diverse cultural environment, Elaiho drew from multiple traditions and combined them with modern influences, crafting a musical language that resonated across Nigeria and West Africa. Formed in 1973, his band quickly gained recognition for their energetic performances and seamless fusion of indigenous percussion with Western instruments, producing music that celebrated life, love, and identity.
Their debut album Super Sound of Akaba (1973, Philips Records) immediately established their reputation, followed by a self-titled project the same year. By the mid-1970s, albums like Orisa, Jojoji, and Sere Nuwa marked their prolific run, with Orisa in particular cementing Elaiho’s influence. Later works such as Eghenayahiore (1979), Yabomwen (1982), and Iruemwense (1984) showed the group’s adaptability to changing trends while staying true to highlife’s roots.
Popular singles like “Nomienmila,” “Kokodia,” and “Omoniyakioya” displayed their talent for storytelling, social reflection, and catchy melodies. Beyond entertainment, the band’s music acted as a cultural bridge, connecting traditional African values with the demands of a modernising industry.
Even after their peak, Elaiho’s extensive catalog – over 18 releases- continues to inspire highlife musicians. His legacy is remembered not only for prolific output but also for championing cultural authenticity during highlife’s rise to prominence.
